    Happened to me yesterday.

Did some searching, tried a few things, then:

went to "Settings", then "General", then "Reset", then "Reset all settings"

This does not destroy any data, only a few things needed to be reconfigured; lock screen, wallpaper, lock code, WiFi password, etc. Everything was back to normal in just a few minutes, AND THE APP STORE NO LONGER GAVE THE 1004 ERROR MESSAGE!

    restart and reboot the ipad...
Restart: Hold down the power button until the power off slider appears. Slide it off. When the iPad finishes shutting down, hold down the power button again until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: Hold down the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears. The iPad will reboot. This usually takes a bit longer than a restart.

i wouldn't recommend this for those who have JB'd their iPads. i ended up with an endless loop of rebooting that necessitated a restore.

now, still figuring out how the xbackup app works... the saved backups are not there :(

    Try this

Apparently, resetting everything works for some. But as mentioned beforw, it’s not a good idea if you are jailbroken. It can cause problems

But, here’s a solution that worked for me. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16228784#16228784
Basically, clear all safari caches on your ios device, turn off and then on again.

also apple store bandwidth being hammered with new 4s buyers.... and IOS 5 updaters, so errors are MUCH more likely right now.

I just followed yarrenbool's suggestion. The ipad turned itself off and now won't restart at all - I just have a blank, black screen... Does anyone know what I should do now? Please help!
Later.... I got the ipad to restart and hooked it up to itunes store to sync, backup etc so that I could (attempt) to download iOS5.
got the following message after about 5 hours... "The ipad cannot be restored at this time because the ipad software update server could be contacted or is temporarily unavailable". Along with Error 1004 (which didn't occur this time), I have had this message for that last couple of months. Any clues as to how I correct this one??
