Within 3 months of purchasing my iPad, I probably spent around $50 on apps.

After 2 weeks about 50. This is without any books which I thought I would be spending most of my money on.

I've spent about $12.00 on apps for my iPad mini. Almost twice that for my iPhone 4S.

Any time I use a free app I'll try to buy the paid version, if there is one, because I like to support app developers.
