Oh ok so you don't need any additional software to bypass the protection with handbrake. I didn't know that. I'll have to try it as soon as I get my 3G then.
No, you must also have VLC installed and run it at least once before you can use Handbreak to re-encode a copy-protected DVD.

What settings are you using, and what is your source (dvd, video file, etc)? I think the biggest factor in processing time is video bitrate.I'm trying the "Free Trial" version of Wondershare on a couple of MS Vista PCs and they seem to take forever to convert, literally longer than the movie itself. Has this been others experience? A setting perhaps?

Depends on the settings you use, especially video bitrate. For example, a 22min anime episode converted from a dvd using these settings:How large are the files for a typical 1.5 hour movie stored on the iPad. (Apple won't be getting mine until the middle of June:-(
