Video transfer

I purchased the iPad connection kit and the salesperson said I would be able to transfer video files directly to my iPad (which I can) and watch them instantly (which I cannot) ... When I loaded videos from an sd shot on my go pro they videos appear as a white icon with "mp4" labelled on it. And videos from my kodak zi8 appear as "mov". What do I need to do...I hope it is as simple as downloading an app!
