Used ipad

I was given a used IPAD as a gift before I head overseas. Apparently the previous owner established his itunes acct and now I cannot authorize this ipad on my account or my mac. Any ideas on how to get around this?

This is pretty much all you can do that makes sense. Plus it starts you with your own account.
