Unlock problem

Ipad wants to be unlocked but displays a dial pad. The unlock code is not numeric. Need a keypad. Tried resolving it through i tunes, but i tunes cannot connect to the ipad. Probably because we cannot unlock it?

Has it worked previously? If you set an alpha-numeric passcode you should see a keyboard. You could try a forced restart. Hold down the Home Button and the On/Off button simultaneously until the Apple logo shows. Hopefully the keyboard will appear.
