Unable to save photo edits

I sometimes want to paste a small picture onto another picture using the Photos app. I learned how to do this some time ago. The only problem is that sometimes the app can’t save the results. I’ve tried restarting my iPad but it’s made no difference. I’m guessing my iPad Mini (A17 Pro) doesn’t have the processing power?

That's a trick I don't know how to do. If you could describe the procedure, maybe I can reproduce the problem. That might help. Probably not, but otherwise I have no idea how to even try.
