Tracking a lost ipad

Is it possible to track a lost/stolen iPad, if the find my iPhone/iPad feature is not on the device? Can it be traced by serial number, maybe by contacting apple when the person tries to sync it to iTunes? It had a password code on it, can that be reset by who ever has it?

Not sure how all of this works, just wanted to see if anyone knows.

The only "find your iPad" app requires a MobileMe account unless you use jailbreak alternatives. The person that stole your iPad can unfortunately do these 2 things: put it in restore mode, or put it in DFU mode. So sorry for losing your interesting-companion-in-life-pad but unfortunately you've had it and there's nothing you can do about it.

Oh, it wasn't mine. A co-worker's was stolen. I was just wondering if there was a way it could be traced thru the serial number once the person tried to register it.

Thankfully I still have my beloved iPad!
