Lost IPAD Question

Wife lost her new IPAD; i.e. lost, person who found decided not to return.

We have the serial number, and a receipt. We have filed a police report.
The IPAD connects via wifi only, and according to apple is still associated with
my email address.

1. Can/will Apple do anything if I provide them with the serial number?
2. Is it possible to track down this IPAD if the thief connects it to the internet?

Did you register it with MobileMe.com when you first got it?
