Size of iPad screen when creating graphics?

I'm designing some graphics for an iPad application and can't find the max size for the iPad. Is it 1024-by-768? I know this is the screen size but is it the same for creating graphics?

I think so, yes. For instance if you use a background image finder app on the iPad, generally they all have images that are 1024x1024 - even though the screen is 1024x768, a 1024x1024 image will work in both portrait or landscape mode, though either the "top/bottom" or "left / right" edges of the image would be cropped, no matter what.
