On this day in 1899, Henry Ford left his position of chief engineer at the Edison Illuminating company's main plant to concentrate on automobile production. After several false starts he founded the Ford Motor Company in 1901.
 
On this day in 1914,the Panama Canal opened to traffic. Between 1909 and 1914 the United States spent over $400,000,000.00 dollars on construction of the Canal.

The canal was a must see, which we did on our New Year's cruise 4 years ago.

On this date in 1987, Rudolf Hess,the last living member of Hitler's inner circle was found strangled to death in Spandau Prison in Berlin,apparently the result of a suicide. He was 93.
