You haven’t accidentally switched on mute by any chance?
Do you still hear sounds other than the missing notification sounds?

The age shouldn’t have any effect. Try going to Sounds in Settings and slide the sound level higher.

The only other thing I can suggest is to change the sounds (temporarily even) to see if that triggers their return.

Not necessarily.
Take a look at Settings -General - Restrictions - Allow Changes - Volume Limit. Make sure you allow changes there.
If you don’t find out what’s causing your issue, reset all settings (Settings - General - Reset). This will set back all your settings to default, and should bring back your notifications.

No, you won’t lose data with this reset. Just make sure you select the right one: Reset all Settings, nothing else.
