I'm still learning how to use the ipad 3 if any one has suggestions I would love to hear them ,even tips or tricks
I know in having trouble with the messenger to text any one the only one I can text is my kid who has an iPhone are you only allowed to texted apple users. Thanks for your help.

Yes. From an iPad you can only iMessage other iOS users, or OS X if you have a Mac.

On an iPhone you can choose to send SMS messages when the iMessage service is not available, because it's a phone. The iPad can't do this (from the Messages app) without jailbreaking, and then you might run afoul of your cellphone provider's user agreement. Not that I've heard of anyone getting caught or fined.

There are third party apps that will allow you to send SMS messages from your iPad. They usually involve getting a phone number and a small fee, though I seem to remember one or two of them being free. You have to have an internet connection for them to work. I don't use any of these, so the names of the common apps aren't coming to mind.

There are also other apps that support other chat services like AOL and IM. These will work on all devices provided the necessary apps are loaded on all devices. Another words you all have to agree what message service to use.

A search of the app store might help, and other members may come by and suggest their favorite solutions.

I didn't know you could message anyone with my ipad

For personal day-to-day use and communications their isn't much the iPad can't do, though the route there often involves third party apps and some exploring. Welcome to the forum. Lot to learn here, and good people to learn it from.
