New Member Intro

Hi, I am new to this and got an iPad 4 for Xmas! I have an apple mac and iphone 5. I too am baffled with the iMessage. I can send iMessages from my mac laptop to certain mobile numbers only.
I have sent messages previously to my sister who has an iphone but now I can't. It just says her mobile is not registered.
Very strange!
