I want to purchase an iPad 2, 32GB, wifi + 3G but am so confused right now it's not funny. I see ads saying GSM unlocked what is that? I also see ads that just say unlocked as well as ads saying jailbroken. Can you explain the diffences? I mainly want to use my iPad for e mails, games, music both here and internationally. Of course I don't know what my 10 year old will use it for (God help us)
Tks

Gsm unlocked and unlocked means you can use it with any gsm carrier's simcard.Jailbrake gives you the opertunity to customize your ipad at will.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

GSM is about the cellular network for the iPad, if it's locked this means that you must stay with that carrier and no other sim card will work. If you want to travel overseas it would be best to have an unlocked GSM iPad so that you may just swap out the sim for whichever network you want to use. Do not get a Verizon iPad 2 as these are not supported in many countries and actually don't have a removable sim. Jailbreaking is for people who want more control over their iPad than what Apple allows. It will void the warranty on an iPad but is a totally legal thing to do and can be removed if the need ever arises that you need to take your iPad back to Apple. I will include a link below which will explain it better than I ever could. I hope this helps you.

Thank you for the information and sites I will find them very helpful I am sure. One more question after buying an GSM unlocked iPad how do I go about getting At&t, Verizon or other service? Do I download something or take it to the store? Also do you know where I can get information on what I should buy going to Spain and the Canary Islands? Verizon has told me that their services will work for Spain but not the Islands which is upsetting as I will be there for a month. I hope I do not have to purchase a new phone just to use there.
Thanks

As you will need a sim for your iPad you will need to go to a store for this, I have heard if you go to an Apple store that they will give you a sim free of charge, you can then go on the Internet and join a plan if you wish. Verizon is not GSM and as I said previously is not supported in many countries so I would not recommend this for anyone wishing to travel internationally.

I have no knowledge of networks in Spain or the Canary Islands, I hope others here may.
