Mixing iRig input with Sirius/XM audio

I can't figure out how to mix two "live" inputs in my iPxxx. My needs require two apps to be running at the same time and I don't even know if that is possible. I am using an old iRig (the first version) to input live guitar feed and I want to mix that with Sirius/XM streams (or other externally sourced audio). The iRig does not seem to be active without a recording active working, and obviously Sirius/XM needs its app running too. Is there any obvious way of doing that?
