Lately I don't have sound on some apps, especially games, but I still hear sound on the iPad's iPod, videos, and some other apps. I checked the sound settings and they are all set to "On."

Some apps misinterpret the iPad's Mute function (which is only supposed to mute system sounds) and will cut off all audio if that function is enabled. There are two potential ways in which it can be switched on - either the hard switch next to the volume control or the soft switch in the far left of the multi-task bar. It might be worth checking. Mute does not affect headphone so a quick way to see if this is the problem is to plug in a headphone and see if the volume returns. If it does, it's almost certain that the Mute function is the issue.

Turns out that if you have the "lock rotate" selection enabled in Settings-> General-> use Side Switch to: then many (almost all) games/apps might have mute enabled by mistake (bug/feature?) Fix this issue by simply setting it to "mute" instead which will correct this issue. Just make sure the hard switch is not set to mute! All the notifications and sounds will then be re-enabled. Curiously, many other apps requiring sounds (eg those with their own volume controls) are unaffected.
