Iphone apps on ipad

Does the iphone app on my ipad will update to ipad version when available or i must check my self

If the app is a "universal" app (designated by a + sign in the app store) then it is both iPhone and iPad versions in one. However, an iPhone app won't update itself to an iPad version automatically if the developer has made them separate apps. In this scenario the developer expects you to buy the iPad version in addition to the iPhone one you already own...
