iPad won't back up, can't update to iOS 5.0.1

I have been trying to update my iPad for the past week. I have the iPad 2 and am running windows 7 x64. iTunes will download the update and install it but when it gets to the backup, it freezes and stalls. I can leave the iPad plugged in for days and the progress bar stays the same. I have even cleared everything off of the iPad so there shouldn't be anything to back up. I really need to update, what can I do? I've used a laptop running windows and the same thing happens. Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. Did you manage to backup and download iOS 5? Anyone have a solution to this?
