Ipad message

I entered my friends iPad tel # into his profile and my iPad message doesn't recognize it and it shows up red? Am I doing something wrong

Need to use their email address on an iPad, as iPads do not use the number (on a 3G/4G model) like an iPhone does. You cannot make calls or text from an iPad in the conventional way.
