Can anybody tell me what the arrow that points towards the battery meter is? Its not the one that says the ipod is running, it points slightly upwards

It means an app running on the iPad is using the location of your iPad - could be a mapping program, for example, but lots of apps use the location of the iPad. You can see the programs that you've allowed to use your location and those that have used it recently (and enable/disable them doing so) in 'Settings'.
