iOS and data-gathering?

I’m holding off upgrading to iOS14 because Apple walked back the opt-in feature regarding allowing apps to spy on us and gather and sell our data, web habits, etc.

Does iOS 13.x allow such spy behavior, and if upgrading to 14, is there anything we can do to prevent such until / unless Apple releases the opt-in piece which they postponed because fb and other cried about it?

The walk back is in regard to waiting to implement new announced privacy features, not removing old ones. iOS 14 is at least as private as iOS 13. It will be more so when the new opt-in feature is implemented.

There is quite a bit of controversy over the new opt-in feature. FaceBook and Google are perturbed that you will have to say yes to allowing them to track you across services. This push back, and making sure ad providers have had sufficient warning is probably why it is delayed.

Also, this only affects one kind of tracking, the one based on the anonymous ID Apple provides. It won’t affect all the other ways sites track you. Mostly because those are out of Apple’s control.

Still, if you are in no hurry, it’s never wrong to wait for the first update of a new iOS version. There are bound to be a few bugs; though reports on the betas suggest that iOS 14 will have fewer hiccups than iOS 13 did.
