It was Mercury-Atlas rocket number 6, named "Friendship 7".

Here's a photo of the launch.

Gene Cernan, Apollo 17:
"I'd like to just say what I believe history will record: that America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow. And as we leave the moon at Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind."

John Glenn flew in Friendship 7.

You'll have to excuse my fuzzy history as I'm older than the rocket he rode into orbit.

Mission "Mercury-Atlas 6" (MA-6) carried Glenn's
"Friendship 7" capsule into orbit.

Technical designation of the booster was "Atlas
LV-3B" launch vehicle.

I assume that John Glenn's launch was the 6th mercury launch, including unmanned test flights and the launch of Ham, the chimpanzee.

I'm one of the last of the pre-space age generation, born less than 3 months before the launch of Sputnik.

The reason a lot of people do not recognize opportunity is because it usually goes around wearing overalls looking like hard work.

Just heard this on the Golf Channel.

It's not how well you play that counts. It's how well you play when you play well.
