Before Easter, we were visiting a gardener with our students. We were planting a zucchini. I took mine home, and it's in my living room since then. It's still too cold to put it outside.

The grape vines seem to be coming along quite nicely and the sunset is quite nice despite the scarcity of clouds for dramatic effect.

It's too cold for this time of the year, it was freezing recently. My colleague, whose husband is a vintner, told us today that there's severe damage by frost.

Johanna - just curious since likely a number of different grapes are grown in your area and all have different characteristics relative to budding, resistance to spring frosts, and eventual maturity, do you know which grapes may have been most affected by this cold weather? Sorry, to be a pain, but as an 'enophile' for years, my experience w/ Austrian wines is limited, so just curious - thanks for any info. Dave

Well, my Audubon print (a giclée) of the Carolina Parrot (a.k.a. Parakeet) arrived today and is beautiful - there are 7 birds, so I immediately thought of the seven dwarfs from Snow White, so Susan & I have picked just four to name; SO, below the picture as framed and then my labels added for our named selections (she thought I was so cute - ) - BUT, for the serious ones, take a look at this Audubon Commentary - a pity that these adorable looking birds are extinct. Dave

Well, the giclée printing process is basically a high quality ink jet print - the original is digitally scanned and then the 'image' is accurately matched and adjusted to the best color rendition and finally printed onto a high quality paper w/ an expensive super-ink jet printer - see the quote below for more (Source). P.S. don't understand the 'current bathroom bill'? OK - explained, Susan was referring to our wonderful recently passed North Carolina 'bathroom bill' - ridiculous and unnecessary IMHO!

The Definition : Giclee (zhee-klay) - The French word "giclée" is a feminine noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid. The word may have been derived from the French verb "gicler" meaning "to squirt".

The Term : The term "giclee print" connotes an elevation in printmaking technology. Images are generated from high resolution digital scans and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction.

The Process : Giclee prints are created typically using professional 8-Color to 12-Color ink-jet printers. Among the manufacturers of these printers are vanguards such as Epson, MacDermid Colorspan, & Hewlett-Packard. These modern technology printers are capable of producing incredibly detailed prints for both the fine art and photographic markets. Giclee prints are sometimes referred to as Iris prints, which are 4-Color ink-jet prints from a printer pioneered in the late 1970s by Iris Graphics.

She did not differentiate between types of grapes. All of them have been affected. The problem isn't the frost itself, as I've been informed, but the sun warming the sprouts too fast.
