How to sign up for Apple ID without credit card?

My friend recently bought a new iPad2 3G&Wifi 32GB unit but he could't create a new Apple ID. The system is asking for credit card number but he does not have one right now. There is likewise no "NONE" option for him that should've allowed him to proceed without inputting any credit card details. I will appreciate a feedback the soonest. Thanks.

You can create iTunes accounts in other countries too using this because it's easy to purchase iTunes Gift Cards from the Internet. Since, as you'll have found out, you only need the serial number off the back of the card, the retailer can email you those details and you're good to go in just a few minutes.
