How to retrace the Film folder on the ipad 2

I have had the ipad 2 since Nov 2011. On clicking the video icon two folders were there initially- TV programmes/Films. Since the last 6-8 months only the TV programmes folder is showing and instead of the films folder, an empty folder called 'shared' now exists but when I sync it to my laptop the movies folder shows that the ipad does have an xGB of movies on it with the names etc. but I just can't find the movies on the ipad itself. I have no clue how this has happened and how to resolve it. The local Apple store are equally clueless:-0. Help as need the movies back on for the kids during an upcoming roadtrip...... Thx all.
