How on earth do you really remove safari history??

Odd. I just tested on my iPad, and the only thing that shows up on mine are the things I have bookmarked on the iPad. I don't synch my bookmarks to any other device.

If yours is behaving differently, you might want to visit the Genius Bar. Don't forget to backup your device before you go, in case they replace your device.

I think my problem was that 'way back' when I got the iPad, I must have unknowlingly and mistakenly checked the part that synched my 'bookmarks' without realizing the ramifications. In any case, once I deleted those bookmarks, the iPad Safari stopped popping up the 16 or so URLs when I began entering an address. I am going to go back to iTunes and see if I can revise that selection.

I would agree with USBill. I synch all the time, delete history all the time, cookies, etc, and have never had a problem with any of them showing up.

An alternative that you might want to look at is iCab Mobile browser - they have a privacy mode, and it never saves history, cookies, etc - and you can even verify in the options because it has those things that you can look at, so you can delete individual cookies, etc. The way you truly have to clear it though is before closing, go to the select windows screen, and delete the window you were viewing, rather than just closing the app. When you open it again, you will default to iCab home site, and no information will otherwise be in the app.

It is a great browser too BTW. (I am not affiliated with them, just found it to be my favorite other than Safari).

Safari- does closing sessions delete history?

So, here is my question.

When I close out of all my open sessions by going to the header in Safari, clicking the tab which shows number of open sessions, and then individually deleting those open pages, so all I have there is the "new page" template, does that remove those sites from my history as well?

No, that won't delete any of the history actually. First, do what you describe above and close all the pages.

Then, go into the settings app, then find the safari tab. Down at the bottom you will see tabs for clear history, cookies and cache... Press each of these - theoretically, one should not need to press the cookies, and cache clear. That is the best you can do for safari...

Safari does not really do a very good job of clearing things. If you really want a "privacy mode" you will need to get a 3rd party browser. There a number of reasonable ones. My favorite is iCab.

Joy, thank you for clarity and keeping it simple.. My question is how do you selectively delete cookies? I followed I pad promps and deleted cookies,which it does not confirm, it just sits there like nothing happened, but it also erased my bank cookie,which cannot be re established with out a trip to bank. We need a way to look at the cookies, delete the ones we want to delete. Deleting all of them is as as bad as having 100 of them

No, Safari is a stock iPad app that comes pre-loaded when you buy the iPad. It cannot be deleted. If you were to have issues with Safari (or any stock/default app, for that matter), you would have to do a restore of the iPad. Those type of apps are baked into the iOS.

Selective website data can be managed/deleted. See screen shot found under safari/advanced/website data. I've tested with select sites and I presume it to be cookie data as I was required to logon again to the site after deleting it's site specific data.

how do retrieve deleted web browsing history on ipad/phone...

Through iFile or SHH can u permanent delete your history, but be carfull if u use one of these, messing with the wrong files can seriously mess upp your iPad.

I really appreciate ur time and input.

is there an app u can recommend?

Deleting history automatically

Yes but how do you stop any history being remembered? For instance when you type the beginning of a word in google and it comes up with suggestions or says what you were browsing before. I don't want any prompts.

Why is it that people get so worried/paranoid about their browsing history?

The only reason I can think of is that they've realised too late their history can be accessed, and now they're panicking that their wives or girlfriends will find out how much time they've spent watching porn and quite rightly give them the bum's rush, lol.

This may be news to them – their browsing history is also stored by their ISP, and there's no way they'll be able to delete that.

Serve them right if they're caught, IMO.
