The iPad is a great education tool and teaching kids how to respect and care for an important object is also good for them.

Right on! Respect is lacking in to many adults as well as children. Keep up the good work/training.

Because you have to start somewhere teaching them about how to use and look after things, especially electronic items, and demonstrating trust by letting them handle items is a positive way of doing it. (Do you have small kids yourself?)
My four-year-old loves the apps I've downloaded for her, and she knows she has to earn enough "goody points" to play games, usually for not more than 10-12 mins at a time. As she gets older, there'll be other interesting non-gaming apps like the electronic astrolabe and music synthesizers which will be educational.
