Hi

I have a gmail address and can send/receive through Safari/google site but this does not seem to be connected to the mail icon on screen

Is there some set up I should do?

You will have to add the gmail account manually to Mail. Here is a detailed HowTo:

Didn't realise you had to use Exchange

You don't anymore. Gmail has it's own setup now.
