Frame by frame playback like Quicktime does?

Is there a video player that will let me advance a video (and ideally back it up) frame by frame? This works perfectly with Quicktime on my computer. Purpose is to learn ballroom dance figures and routines at the studio. You have to be able to do this in order to see exactly what is being done.

Were you ever able to find a good solution? Trying to do the same exact thing and can't seem to find a decent app. thanks!
