Downloading gMail for archiving

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Goodreader (or any other app) to download my mail (about 3Gig worth) from gMail so I can archive it?

If there is a way to do this, a procedural would be most gratefully received.

I didn't find an app, but I did find a program that'll run on a PC or Mac to backup Gmail to that PC/Mac.

Now, I didn't try it, so I give no guarantees. Nor am I sure that (1) this is what you want and (2) you don't already have it.

I use Thunderbird for archiving my email on my PC. It's from the developers of Firefox, so open source and free. I especially like the way that it sets up gmail accounts with the same folder structure as on the web. So if I send an email from the web or from my ipad it lands in the sent mail folder on thunderbird.
