DigiTimes has more news today about potential component suppliers for Apple’s iPad 2, which DigiTimes says will be released at the end of the first quarter of 2011. DigiTimes has learned from its sources that Taiwanese company Coretronic will supply backlight units (BLUs) to Chimei Innolux (CMI) and LG Display for the iPad 2, with Coretronic being the only BLU supplier for CMI, although LG Display is sourcing iPad 2 BLUs from Radiant Opoto-Electronics as well as Coretronic. Coretronic has, as usual, declined to comment on the matter.

As MacRumors points out, if this is true, it puts paid to the rumours that Apple would be using OLED technology in the next iPad. Apple has been rumoured to be adopting OLED technology for its devices from as far back as 2003, according to MacRumors, as it has a better contrast ratio to traditional LCDs, but pricing, technical and production issues have prevented the technology from being more widely adopted.
