Catch 22 for Newbie

Hi

I've just received my iPad Pro and on booting up, I'm being presented with a form in which to insert my Apple ID which I've done (using my phone to set it up). The problem is of course in order for the verification to take place I need to be online which the iPad is not. How do I get to the necessary page within the settings of the iPad so that I can tether the machine to my phone?

The setting on the iPad you need will be found under WiFi in Settings. You should find Personal Hotspot listed if it is available.

When you set up an iPad for the very first time, you have to connect it to Wi-Fi first, then you are asked to enter Apple ID and password.

Thank you, I've worked that out now. I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I can find a hotspot. I was just hoping I'd somehow be able to tether the iPad to my phone from the Setup Network page, but I don't think that's possible.

If you turn on the Hotspot on the iPhone (or other hotspot enabled phone), you should be able to use that hotspot name and password exactly the same as you would join any other wi-fi network.

This will, of course, use your carrier data. It should not be much if all you do is activate the iPad. But if you choose to restore the iPad from a backup, or update the iPad, your data use could be heavily impacted. Also, if you have a lot of iCloud files to sync, that might use a lot of data.

The better course is to find a good, fast wi-fi network and use it.

Tethering usually refers to using a bluetooth connection. I’m not even sure it’s still possible with newer iPhones; even if it is, it is slow and buggy comparied to using a phone’s hotspot.
