Cannot find songs on ipod Nano

we purchased a few songs in iTunes, we can see them on the computer in our iTunes, we plug the iPod into the computer sync it and can see the tunes on the iPod nano, but when we unplug it from the computer we cannot find the songs on the iPod..where would they go when they are on the iPod,
