can i use facetime audio with non iPhone contacts

FaceTime only works between Apple computers and devices.

If you want a more universal solution you should get the Skype app. The quality isn't as good as FaceTime, or so I've read in the past, but it does work across most devices and operating systems.

The other friends and family will need Skype as well, of course. There is no common service that works between different apps.
