Can I text a non-smart phone?

I'm assuming there is an app for this!

Q: can I send to and recieve from, texts from NON smart phones?

I have this friend, I can't be mean about saying he's behind the times, when he doesn't have a smart phone.. cause I don't own a cell phone!

He has one of those flip phones, he has texting. I would like to be able to send/recieve text messages to him, from my iPad. Can I do this?

iMessage and KIK don't seem to work for non-smart phone service.

Suggestions?

iMessage only works between iDevices running iOs5 and later, so that's out. As far as I know, there is no other way of doing it.

There are many texting apps

Take a look at Google Voice (a free app in the App Store). You'll need a Google account, but once you do, you can send texts (free) all day long.

I've used it to text from my iPad to my sister, who's using a Tracfone, so I know it works.

There are others, but this is the one I've used.
