Best divx (or mkv) to ipad video converter

I am looking for a video converter to watch movies on my new ipad.
What is the best converter? in particular I am looking for something that support subtitles too.
Do I have to merge video and subs before the conversion or does ipad support subs?

I don't think anyone can tell you what the best converter is...there are many available.

What size files are you starting with? Do you need a converter at all? If you get an app like AVPlayerHD, it can play many types of files without conversion at all. Obviously, if you are starting with 25GB source files, you're going to need to convert that to fit on an iPad.

A good starting point is Handbrake, a free program for Windows and MAC.

You don't need a converter just buy avplayerhd app and it will play what ever you chuck at it no need to wait hours to convert
