AppleInsider reports that Apple has just signed a multi-year deal with Major League Baseball to provide MLB coaches with 12.9-inch iPad Pros kitted out with custom software that will show player stats, stat breakdowns, interactive data, game videos, and much more.

The Wall Street Journal said that the deal was signed at the same time as MLB lifted its restrictions on in-game use of laptops, tablets and smartphones in the dugout.

The new MLB iPad Pros will even come in their own special robust cases, complete with MLB logo.

“We’re not just replacing binders with tablets, we’re actually helping them do things that weren’t possible before,” said Phil Schiller, Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing.

The custom iOS app that the MLB iPad Pros will have pre-installed has been developed by MLB’s Advanced Media division, working in partnership with Apple. Entitled Dugout, it will be loaded with fresh data before each game, and was tested for the first time last year in postseason.

Hopefully it doesn't result in the bad press Microsoft got thru it's deal with the NFL and it's Surface tablets. :)
