Cult of Mac reports on a new story from Digitimes which says that according to its sources in Apple’s supply chain, Apple plans to commission Sharp to make IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) displays for its forthcoming devices, with the aim of keeping the next generation of iPads and iPhones as thin as possible. Digitimes states that the iPad 3 will be the first Apple device to have an IGZO display, with other products to follow. According to Digitimes, the IGZO display will enable the iPad 3 to have full HD resolution, while keeping it as thin as possible. Previous reports on iLounge had suggested that the next iPad might have to be approximately 0.77mm thicker than the iPad 2 in order to accommodate a Retina display, which would require a twin light bar system. As Cult of Mac notes, although Digitimes scored a bit of an own goal with its now debunked “iPad 3 launch at Macworld†story yesterday, that doesn’t mean that this latest story should be discounted, especially as the IGZO display rumour has also previously appeared elsewhere, specifically back in November in a research note from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, who was the first to mention that Apple might consider using Sharp’s IGZO technology in future.
