A call to Applecare gave the answer that the compression algorithm on the cloud reduces the bytes needed vs the way they are stored on the device.

Guess it is all magic. Before I used 2.0 Gb on the Pad and 950 Mb on the cloud. After deleting those "deleted photos" I had 1.6 Gb and 928 Mb respectively. Oh well, I still have plenty of room so I'll blunder along :-) none the wiser.

Twerppoet, thanks for suggestion. Photos use 2.0 Gb. Photo Stream is 395kb. So that is not the difference. The only significant PhotoShare file (268 photos of 632 total photos) I have is Family Shared, mostly from my photos. Surely those would not be full size duplicates but rather pointers to...

Well let me ask it a different way. I also save these pictures on dropbox. Could the dropbox thumbnails be taking up as much space on the device as the full pictures. I certainly shouldn't think so but so far nobody offered any other suggestions :-(

Trying to send a Pages document as a Word Doc. This worked in the past but now hangs up trying to convert to Word. Convert to PDF just fine. Is it just me ot is it iOS 9??

FWIW The User Guide for iOS8 has lots of good info on apps like Safari and iOS in general. It is a free book at the IBook store.

I understand and it is confusing! Now why does Apple not offer archival storage. Photo storage is just a mirroring site. For archival you need DropBox or similar or Time Macine on a Mac. Think there is work to do and confusions to eliminate by Apple!

Twerp poet, thanks. I am in iCloud Drive on all devices. All photos sync. The iPhoto Events is an album created by iPhoto I guess, not by me. So how did it decide which photos to put in it. I'm suspecting they are photos I put on a stick from old PC then uploaded to Mac. Mac created that folder...
