We went to italy and croatia a few months ago now. We used a local TIM sim cardfrom a mobile phone shop in Italy without major problems.. The cost was pretty reasonable and coverage in Italy good...no instructions in English so would be worth your while to get the Italian Vendor to deign to help...

Again thanks this works for any items purchased through the store ......but doesnt work for photos on the ipad, nor for CDs that were transferred to the ipad originally. It doesnt solve the problems... that solution seemed tantalizingly close with the last link you posted !

My problem is that I have an ipad full of the photos, apps and music that I want to keep... But the computer I originally used to synchronize with the Ipad has died. Now when I want to transfer all to the new computer with itunes the warning screen tells me that I can only sync with one...

Thanks The major problem is the global roaming charges from telstra. Thanks for info re France , I gather local sims are hard to get. Do you know anything about relative value of international global roaming cards for Europe .?
