I am very surprised to hear that it is not possible to remove the obstructive symbol. Why would Apple design such a beautiful device with such an annoying feature? I do have jailbreak installed. Please advise how I can remove it or point me to where I can get the information. Thanks!

I adjusted the speaker volume using the volume buttons on the side of the iPad for the first time. Now the speaker volume symbol remains in the middle of the screen and I can't get rid of it. How can I get rid of it?

I did turn on "Open New Tabs in Background" while I looked for Safari version number. It now shows the ON button in white foreground and blue background. However, it hasn't made any difference, in that it doesn't work as you suggested.
