It is a new apple tv. I'm guessing im sol and can't go wireless?
Read the AVSForum link above for workarounds. You'll need some additional equipment in the $30 to $50 dollar range to convert optical output to analog.
Something like this with the appropriate optical Toslink and audio cables should do the trickfor under $50.
For sound only, not via HDMI/TV, use the optical (TOSLink) output. If your system has an optical audio input all you need is an optical "cable". My system only has RCA type inputs, so I also needed an optical to RCA converter.
You may also need to update the ATV's firmware. When I first tried this, I found that I needed HDMI/TV on to initiate sound output to ATV. I could then turn off the TV and still get sound via the optical output, all quite unsatisfactory.
Since upgrading the ATV firmware, ATV can be selected for audio output via TOSLink, when the HDMI/TV is off, as you would expect.
He'll need the converter, since the TOSLink cable is outputting digital which can't be used in Zone 2.
Yes, that's what I was trying to say.
Will I need the toslink cables or will any digital optical cable work?
As far as I know, "TOSLINK" and "digital optical cable" are interchangeable names for the same thing.

(With the Monoprice adapter above, you could also use a digital coaxial cable, if you have that output)
