Out of icloud space and cant delete pictures from ipad2

I have read multiple suggestions on these forums and imported all of my iPad pictures to my Mac Mini in an attempt to free up iCloud space (iPad not backing up for past 10 weeks). After a lengthy import, I received a message asking if I wanted the photos removed my the iPad. I selected yes and again waited for several minutes until the process completed. Following all of that, I was surprised to find (1) not only that all of the pictures remain on my ipad; but (2) that I have absolutely no option to delete them (over 2000 pix). I am really frustrated since I even paid extra for iCloud and I still am not getting any benefit. Does anyone know if it is even possible to remove photos from an iPad and, if so, how?
