Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Have a look in Settings - General - About and look for version and it will tell you what you are now on. If you upgrade now it will be to IOS 5.0.1 which will bring you a variety of new features. First of all make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. It is also an idea to disable any virus protection whilst doing the upgrade. Have a look at these links to guide you. Good luck, let us know if you need more help.
