New to Ipad's, help with synchin it...

Hi, ok so ive had my ipad2 a week now and when i did my 1st synch i got all the stuff on there from my iphone, simply how do i keep them seperate ? I mean i want to do my phone of course and ipad but i dont want to have to keep deleting things everytime i synch either of them which i what ive done thsi week, hope someone can help, and yes im sure its a simple thing lol sorry.
