Hi all - I have just bought an ipad2 so have my "learner " wheels on. I also have an iPhone. In July my husband & I are going overseas - Ireland for 10 days & then a 14 night cruise visiting Barcelona, Florence, Rome etc.
I would like to take my ipad but don't want to incur costs for using it. Can anyone advise me what to do - I would be very grateful.

Thank you for your welcome and I am sorry if I am not posting correctly - I will make sure I read the rules. I am not sure about wifi access. I am from Australia and we will fly to Dublin, Ireland for 10 days....then fly to Southampton in London to board cruise ship for 14 days...Spain...France...Rome and then back to London for a week. I have an ipad2 with wifi 3g. To use wifi (if available) I believe I need to take my iphone (as I don't want to incur the high costs involved)........I was told perhaps the easiest way was to purchase a sim card for my ipad from the country I will be in at the time. Your feedback would be appreciated.:)

There are no data charges incurred when using WiFi. There are free WiFi hotspots available almost anywhere. Where WiFi isn't free, you pay for it by the hour/day/ week, etc. in any case, it has no effect on your data use.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Yes, you will be able to take your iPad to use overseas. The cheapest way would be to buy a sim in the places you are visiting or use free wifi where available. Although there are security risks involved with using free wifi. My experience has been that most hotels will charge a daily fee for wifi so getting a prepaid sim is the way to go. You don't need your phone to enable this though. I have travelled overseas and used my ipad in many places, just not the places you're going to though. ;). As its a 3G iPad it will be very useful for GPS also, you do not need an active sim for this to work, the GPS chip is built into the iPad. There are many apps available for download from which you can download maps in advance also for use on your trip. There's also many travel apps available for all the different countries and these can be very good for tips on places to see, things to do and even where to eat.

Hopefully members from these areas will be able to tell you what carriers are best for your needs.
