Hi, all,

It is a real pleasure to read the messages and comments on this forum. I am a new (two weeks!) iPad 2 user gingerly finding their way with this amazing device. I do not use my Mac Book so often now. This is my first post.

I am from Lower Hutt, New Zealand, an earthquake-prone country. Lower Hutt is presently safe, unlike Christchurch, the latter shaken severely today with two damaging shallow earthquakes. No deaths, thank goodness, but plenty of damage. Their earthquakes started last September...

Now to the guidance I need -

what is the best converter and procedure to use to save downloaded YouTube videos?

Cheers, all

Ken

Good to hear from you. You’ll find a whole bunch of iPad enthusiasts in this Forum who are only too willing to help other iPad owners and to hear of their experiences. Don’t be afraid to post any questions you may have or use the ‘Search’ button near the top of the Forum web page. I usually find I discover one new interesting and useful piece of information about my iPad every day - and often not even what I was looking for!!

Hope to hear from you soon with your thoughts about the iPad.

Have fun and enjoy your iPad

If you don’t already have it you can download a copy of the iPad manual for free.

Please read the rules too!!

To download files and other tasks, GoodReader is what you want...

There is a program that most all iPad users have called GoodReader. It's the 'Swiss Army Knife' for the iPad and it can store files all together and in folders - or however you want them - and can transfer files to and from your PC using either WiFi or USB without the need for iTunes. It's built in web-browser can download files too, something that Safari doesn't offer - except for PDF format. From within GoodReader you can open those files in any app that supports that type of file. Having said that, though, when a compatible app does open that file it makes a local copy that it works on, so the original copy in GoodReader is left untouched. If you want to store the modified file in GoodReader you have to transfer it back there by some means.

GoodReader can also attach several files to an email and then send them using the iPad's native Mail app - something you can't do from within Mail itself. It also gives you the opportunity to annotate PDF files and save the resulting file so that it can be read on a PC or Mac.

Saving YouTube videos

Ta, Tim, anmol.roes,

Two things I do not like about iPad 2 - the biggie - no flash support. I cannot view NZ TV on Demand here in NZ. If I use, say, iSwifter or Skyfire, iPad apps, where the programme is processed in an off-shore server, when it returns, Television NZ say I appear to be outside NZ. They say this is a no-no because of their international agreements. I have not swotted up on a technique where I can hide the country origin of my ISP/disguise the offshore server's ISP whatever. I do not want to jailbreak my iPad either.

The other thing that grates is the so-called Smart Cover. Unless one is fastidious, it leaves a removable pattern on the iPad's screen, and tends to detach itself from the iPad when one least expects it. Disconcerting! Additionally, sooner or later, the cover's magnetic clamp-hinges will scratch the metal of the iPad itself. Ta for the Wikipedia suggestion, I'll swot it up.

Cheers,

Ken
