Jailbreak benefits new iPad

Hey guys... I am new to the apple world and have one question..

I have heard a lot about people jail breaking their iPads and doing cool stuff with it...

Just wanna know what are the key benefits of doing a jailbreak? Also if you do it can you download all apps for free from 3 rd party websites?

Can you also suggest a few websites which let you do it?
