Does anyone know what to set on the itunes program so that more than one ipad can be synced with the same computer without intermingling the ipad identities?

iTunes automatically knows which iPad is being synced. What you have to do to so you can tell the devices apart Is to give each of them a different name so you can tell which backup is which. Here is a screenshot showing the name area at the top of the page, which you will see if you go to Settings>General>About.Tap on the arrow at the right side of the name line to edit the name.
